چکیده

Networks of workstations and high-performance microcomputers have been rarely used for running highperformance applications like multimedia, simulations, scientific and engineering applications, because, although they have significant aggregate computing power, they lack the support for efficient message-passing and shared-memory communication. In this paper we present Telegraphos, a distributed system that provides efficient shared-memory support on top of a workstation cluster. We focus on the network interface of Telegraphos that provides a variety of shared-memory operations like remote reads, remote writes, remote atomic operations, all launched from user level without any intervention of the operating system. Telegraphos I, the first Telegraphos prototype has been implemented. Emphasis was put on rapid prototyping, so the technology used was conservative: FPGA’s, SRAM’s, and TTL buffers. Telegraphos II, is the single-chip version of the Telegraphos architecture; its switch was implemented and its network interface is being debugged.

Performance Prediction and Network Media Selection for PVM Clusters

Workstation clusters are becoming more popular as a parallel computing platform. Several programming libraries, including Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM), allow workstation clusters to be programmed as a single parallel computer. The performance of parallel programs is often affected by complex interactions between hardware and software. Performance prediction tools can help characterize the per...

Concurrent and Distributed Data Structures for Multikey Sorting on Computer Clusters

Parallel computing has long offered the promise of very high performance for a wide range of applications, but unfortunately it is hampered by several drawbacks. Among the drawbacks of exploiting parallelism is the cost of messagepassing and communication overhead. Consequently, the trend in parallel and distributed computations is moving away from specialized platforms, such as the Cray/SGI T3...

Fast messages: efficient, portable communication for workstation clusters and MPPs

Prognostications of the National Information Infrastructure’s future structure typically include high-performance servers of information, computation, and other specialized services embedded in a high-speed network fabric with hundreds of millions of other hosts. Two system architectures are likely candidates for these servers: massively parallel processors and networks of workstations. Both ar...

Experiences with Asynchronous Communication Models in VEOS, a Distributed Programming Facility for Uniprocessor LANs

Like conventional multiprocessors, workstation clusters can provide data sharing and parallel computing. But unlike multiprocessors, these clusters provide flexible connectivity and can tolerate heterogeneous processing elements. Uniprocessor LANs are a common choice for cost-effective computing. The workstation nodes typically run a version of Unix and support common Unix services such as reli...

Load Balancing for Parallel Loops in Workstation Clusters

Load imbalance is a serious impediment to achieving good performance in parallel processing. Global load balancing schemes cannot adequately manage to balance parallel tasks generated from a single application. Dynamic loop scheduling methods are known to be useful in balancing parallel loops on shared-memory multiprocessor machines. However, their centralized nature causes a bottleneck even fo...
